The Types of Common Headache

Headache is a common ailment that many people experience. There are many types of headache and understanding the differences between them can help you better manage your condition. Here is a brief description of some of the most common types of headaches we see at Essendon Health and Sports Centre.

  1. Tension headaches: Tension headaches are the most common type of headache. They are usually caused by stress, tension, or muscle strain in the neck and scalp. Symptoms include a dull ache on both sides of the head and tightness or pressure in the forehead or temples. These are very common. (Tension headaches)
  2. Migraines: Migraines are not just a bad headache. Migraines are a type of headache that can be severe and disabling. They are often accompanied by other symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. Migraines may be triggered by certain foods, stress, or hormonal changes.
  3. Cluster headaches: Cluster headaches are a rare type of headache that occur in cyclical patterns or clusters. They are extremely painful and typically affect one side of the head. Symptoms include severe, burning pain around the eye, redness, and tearing. (Cluster headache )
  4. Sinus headaches: Sinus headaches are caused by inflammation of the sinuses and can be triggered by allergies or a sinus infection. Symptoms include pain and pressure around the eyes, cheeks, and forehead, and congestion. (Sinus headaches)

This list is by no means exhaustive. In fact the International Headache Society recognizes more than 200 different types. International Headache Society

Most of these will be unknown to the majority of us which is why this article concentrates on the most common presentation of headache.
